Saffron is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible in Song of Solomon 4:14.
"It is a bulbing plant that produces a purple flower close to the surface of the ground. After the flowers are harvested, the red stigmata from the centre of the flower is removed and dried. It is the dried stigmata that is used and sold commercially as a spice. It takes one acre of harvested flowers to make one pound of saffron spice."
